Tracking the Economic Trajectory of Oakland and the East Bay

THE CHALLENGE

Oakland and the broader East Bay face a complex and uneven economic recovery shaped by post-pandemic disruption, population decline, labor market shifts, and structural challenges in housing, downtown vitality, and high-wage industry growth. Business leaders and policymakers needed a clear, credible understanding of how national and state economic forces intersect with local conditions, as well as a consistent evidence base to inform advocacy, investment priorities, and regional strategy. The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce required a trusted analytical partner to translate complex economic data into accessible insights that could guide decision-making and align stakeholders around a shared understanding of the region’s economic realities and opportunities.

OUR APPROACH

CVL Economics serves as the Chamber’s long-term economic research partner, producing the Oakland and East Bay Economic Indicators Report and presenting findings at the Chamber’s annual Economic Summit. Each year, the team synthesizes national, state, regional, and city-level data to assess trends in employment, industry performance, business formation, housing, trade, tourism, and demographics. The analysis highlights both near-term pressures and longer-term structural shifts, with special focus on Oakland’s competitiveness, workforce dynamics, and key economic drivers. By pairing rigorous analysis with clear storytelling and public-facing presentations, CVL Economics equips the Chamber and its partners with actionable intelligence to support advocacy, inform policy conversations, and shape a forward-looking regional economic narrative.
